Think of the Internet as a Kitchen….

So my English professor decided to explain to us how the internet works.  This was AFTER he drew a bunch of dots on a circle and a rectangle illustrating how a computer wrote information onto a harddrive and a thumbdrive. This is as much as I can remember…I was trying hard not to laugh.  And when I couldn’t supress that I was trying not to laugh hard.   Enjoy…

think of the internet as a kitchen
we have a table here [proceeds to draw the table]
and a cabinet [draws cabinet]
and so maybe we need some milk
we know where to get milk from
[draws milk in cabinet]
so on our computer we can get it
but if we run out/don’t have it
we’ll have to find out where to get it
so let’s say we go to the market
[draws a crude supermarket that’s near us]
so i don’t know the address for weaver street
but let’s say it’s 123 weaver street
[writes that above crudely drawn structure]
so we know that the milk is in an aisle
[proceeds to draw milk on an aisle]
so we know we have to go to this address to get the milk
and we know the location of the milk in this aisle
so let’s label this milk.jpeg
and say that weaverstreet has a web address of weaverstreet.org
so if this was a computer
we would have to have this in the address bar
http//:
now http stands for hypertext transfer protocol
i’m not exactly sure what it is
but it’s one o fthe languages programmers use and the computer understands
so you’d have to have
http//:weaverstreet.org/aisle/milk.jpeg
and there you would know where the milk was
if you needed it

Yeah….at least he didn’t say it was a series of tubes?
